My stocker just won't die
You bought the bike in 2008 right? It's only 2 years old.
Lead acids last 3 to 3 1/2 years typically so yours is due to crap out any time now. Mine lasted 3 years, with yours 2008 + 3 = 2011......so get ready.

Actually, it will be 3 years old in April- May. Just sat in the cold for the last few days. I do not leave it plugged in continually because I do not pay for the power. Any time I plug in the charger, the light goes from charging to charged in a second. That sucker is as good as gold now. But I really want to change it. Glad you guys are willing lab test animals.

Dogo you take care of the 14, that is the one I'm concerned about, lots of motor to turn over there.
Will do. Not gonna hook yours up to your 14 just to see???
Thanks for bringing these things to our attention and doing so much leg work, Kruz.
My stocker just won't die
My '05 10r still has the factory battery and it won't die either. That's why I'm willing to test these things, though. I'd be pissed if I needed a new battery and the Shorai doesn't perform the way I need it to.

I'm goin' with the LFX18A1-BS12 for my 14, however, I'm also ordering a LFX14A1-BS12 for my 10r and will hook it up to the 14 also just to see if it adequately turns the bike over.
I'm not sure of the output of the stock battery in the 14. The part # is ftz14-bs, if you wanna do a search.
Here's a link to Shorai's reccomendations for the zx14.

Found the factory battery specs
The Stock Battery from my 2007 is Length: 148MM, Width: 82MM, Hight: 145MM.
New Battery is spec,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Length: 148MM, Width: 66MM, Hight: 105MM.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Length: Same Width: -16MM Hieght: -30MM
we were able to put the two test batteries in the little freezer overnight to cool them down. About 24 hours later, we removed them for a final bit of abuse before installing long term. Once again, for testing purposes, we installed the iced LFX7 in the Husaberg. It started immediately with no hint of a burden.
Sounds great. I'm in.

OK Rook, if you're using a battery tender during the winter months you should be able to get at least five years out of a good lead/acid battery. I have a worst case scenario with all these bikes parked in the garage, even in summer they only get ridden maybe once a week, twice at most. Winter time is much worse and I don't use a tender.

Shorai's technical department got right back to me with my cold starting questions, called me on my mobile and then followed up with an e-mail. First rate tech support so far and they seem to have answered all of my questions in detail. I printed their reply in full, including contact information for you guys if you have further questions. I am now guardedly optimistic that these batteries are going to work well. Will have them Monday afternoon, Good Lord willing!

Hello, I currently own five motorcycles ranging from a ZX-6R all the way up to a ZX-14R. I am very interested in your batteries but have one reservation that is keeping me from taking the plunge right now and upgrading all my bikes to your lightweight batteries. I belong to five different motorcycle enthusiasts forum and your batteries are being heavily discussed on the internet. The older lithium packs marketed mainly at racers by TurnTech, SpeedCell, Mavryk, Full Spectrum etc. are very light weight but they have a problem when used on the street in cold weather, the bike won't crank. If you are offering these new Shorais as OEM replacements for Lead/Acids then I have to believe you understand these will be used by commuters in very low temperatures and have addresed the cold start issue. Sportbike riders will buy these batteries by the millions but only if they are reliable. Almost every sport bike rider I have talked to is interested in your batteries because of the substantial weight savings involved, they just are not willing to swap start reliability for the light weight if this becomes a compromise.I cannot find anything on your site that adresses this issue. Everyone is waiting for someone else to take the plunge on your batteries and try one. If I buy one, can I be assured it will cold crank my motorcycle in Texas winter temperatures? If so I'll give it a try, if not I'll stick with the heavier but tried and tested Lead /Acid.
Hi John,
I think this “might” have already been answered , but just in case…
Our LFX are starting very well for everyone down to about 15 deg. F. Below that, it depends a bit on the type of solenoid, and the draw from the starter. In any case, if the headlight comes on when key is turned on, and you can let the headlight burn for a minute or two (or more, depending on temp) before cranking, you can get good results down to and below 0f. When our LFX lithium batteries are cold, they need only a moderate current (headlight, suit warmers) for a few minutes to “wake them up”, and they crank much, much better.
It is important to note that our LFX are a large improvement over power-tool cell type batteries with respect to cold cranking, and that they are completely opposite in reaction to cold temps compared to lead-acid. With lead, your first crank may be the only shot you get, as each subsequet crank will have fading voltage. LFX (as described above) actually improve with every crank attempt in cold weather, so if the first shot doesn’t do it, the second likely will…

OK, got my new Shorai battery in. Appears to be very high quality and very light, check out the third pic, 1.54 lbs.... exactly what Shorai lists in their specs. Next step, get this thing in the bike and see how it cranks up.

Full Test report is coming guys, it's been colder than a well diggers butt down here since Sunday night, highs in the low 30 F range so I'm hoping to get out in the garage and install the Shorai on Friday, temps are forecast to "soar" into the low 50's. I hate winter!!!!!

Sorry ScottJkyl, we can take heat and lots of it down here but start to wimp out when the thermometer heads south. I'll get out there in the garage and get this done, either tomorrow or Saturday and post a report. I know a lot of you guys are waiting to see how they perform before taking the plunge.
