Weight reduction
09/04/09 2:22 PM

I searched, but I couldn't find anything. Seems there was a thread some time ago about who had the lightest ZX14. Just wondering if someone remembers, if they could mention about what the weight was. Doesn't have to be exact, to the nearest half pound works for me. ;->

Close to 100 lbs. lighter than stock.
I gave up and also yanked my mirrors and tail supports too.

Okay, that may have well been what I was thinking of. I keep running the numbers in my head, and with CF wheels, it sure seemed like I could drop close to 100 pounds.

Do you recall what the weight savings were from the wheels? Are you running ceramic bearings?

I did a lot more than just the wheels- my entire rear wheel assembly
is 07-08 gsxr1000 including swapping brake hanger, caliper, rotor etc.
with weight savings being the #1 goal.

Just a swap from oem to BST on the zx14 will shed close to 20 lbs. off.
I do have ceramic wheel bearings but wouldn't recommend them due to the $$$.

Here it is roughly for me:

- slightly over 40 lbs. with the exhaust swap

- slightly over 25 lbs. with the wheels swap and rear wheel conversion with all
titanium hardware including both front and rear axle; my rear 220mm brake rotor
is 1/3 of the weight of the oem 250mm; my Tokico rear brake caliper and hanger is 1/2 of
the weight of the oem Nissin

- slightly over 10 lbs. with the Speedcell battery

I have removed all rubber isolation between the frame and tank, switched to an
aftermarket side stand, ditched the belly pan and bracket, removed the Reed valve,
switched to a zx10 cf front fender, removed the rear fender, switched to cf heel guards,
switched to Oberon pegs, removed padding from lower and mid fairings fairings, switched to
a billet Vortex gas cap, switched to Spiegler brake and clutch lines with a very short rear line
and all oem swingarm brackets removed, switched to aftermarket bar ends and Pazzo levers, removed
the tool kit and box, removed the side helmet lock and chain, removed my tail section supports,
removed my mirrors, removed my horn, switched to Factory-Pro Velocity stacks and yanked the stock rubber ones...

I'm sure I'm forgeting a lot of stuff that was stripped off the bike or modded.

I've added a GPR V4, PC3, Speedohealer- probably 3 lbs. with harnesses and damper mount.

Very close to 100 lbs. lighter than stock and certainly over 100 lbs. lighter than a stock 08-09 zx14.

dayum. what does yours weigh? i basically have all that minus the wheels (i only have the gsxr wheel, -7 lbs), as well as -1 front brake rotor/caliper and it weighs 475ish. plus i have the cf bodywork and catalyst seat (combined about 12 lbs)

Slow, I haven't put it on a scale as of late, but with the low fuel light
on and maybe stripped down some more it should be in the 460-465 lbs. realm.

I'm also looking at the cf fairings but will only swap the mids. The lowers and
grills and such will net very little weight savings as mine are already stripped
of all the padding underneath and although oem they are very light.
There's probably a couple of lbs. to be shed from the mids but I also want to relocate
my turn signals to the small outers of the headlights and just get cf fairings that
are flush and don't have the turn signals cut aways.

Mass, honestly the CF fairings are barely, if any lighter then the stock. I have the weights around here somewhere, but stocks with foam compared to the CF without was only like 4lbs difference. Thats for everything, nose uppers lowers foremans battery cover front fender and belly pan.

A set of catalyst fairings with the "pro stock" tank will save a substantial amount of weight

I just want the mid fairings in cf and the turn signals relocated.
Honestly the bike is as stripped down as possible for any street riding.
Will pit it on a well calibrated scale and post pics soon of the weight.

The magazines first reported the 06 zx14 to tip the scales at around 555-560 with a full
tank of fuel.
I actually take my words back and predict weight within 455 lbs. for my bike with minimal
amount of fuel (less than .5 gallons).

I've wanted to put a couple of other bikes on the scale as well- 08 gsxr 750, 09 R1 and a
friend's 05 zx10, will be nice to have some actual weight numbers to compare and just have
as a reference point.
