Hitch
10/05/09 10:10 PM

Ok, before you guys blast me, I want my ZX14 to be a camping hauler. I want to pull a light trailer for camping. Does anyone have any experience with a hitch on the ZX14?

Probably gonna be hard to find with the profile of the rear end as it is.Never seen one yet.Don't see how it could safely attach and connect to a trailer.

Coming ~~ Soon ~~ ZX-14 year 2006 Hayabusa Style

I think that's an awesome idea! It would be perfect for a long trip and what the hell - you can always remove the hitch when you get back.

Thanks guys. For those that don't understand the thinking, I love to sport tour and want to take gear to a campground and then hit the local curves without having to find a hotel. You meet allot of cool people that way. Its cheaper too.

Actually it is simple enough to fab up, mounted to the right side of the swing arm only, and has a reasonable tensioner spring for dampening. I have seen quite a few over-seas that work great.

there is a company that makes a one wheel trailer that mounts to the axle, I'll try find the company, and post the address. I put a hitch on my zrx12 and its great to get somewhere and then ride from there.

I finally got'er done. A few flurries didn't stop the test drive. I used my old connectors from my Harley. It is 5 pin connector from Dauntless motors. The one that came with the hitch from Classic Industries is a 7 flat pin setup I have never seen before. I am so stoked!!!

I give Ethan14 all the credit for taking the time and letting the folks at Classic Industries in Australia use his bike for a mockup. Guys, the packaging was shrink wrapped as well as the part inside the box. Very high quality workmanship. Very thick powdercoat as well. You can take it on and off in less than 5 minutes. Pull your camping stuff with you to campground near Deals Gap, take off (or leave on) the hitch and spank the Dragon or Cherahola Skyway in N.C. It has some adjustment for height as well.

I test drove it today just a little. Snow flurries limited the drive. I am use to pulling a trailer with a Harley. The big Ninja doesn't even act like it is back there. If you shimmy the bars backl and forth a little, you can feel the after shock of the trailer settling back down. I'm 6'3" and 280 and the bike has no issues pulling the trailer and me.

Yes, it has a lot of clearance for wheelies.

Everyone's asking"how does it pull?"My question....How does it STOP?Any brakes on that thing? With all due respect-it looks quite dangerous-it's as long as yer Ninja.I'd not want to NEED to stop in a curve or emergency with that tagging along behind(which it may not be if ya had to brake hard and fast).

The reality of it is you have to stay toned down to sport turing pace. Although the trailer looks heavy, it is only a couple hundred pounds. It just depends on what you have in it that dictates the driving style. As far as breaking goes, ANYTHING stops better than a Harley. You just need to be conscious of it being back there. Defensive driving is the key. Don't put yourself in a situation where you might be coming in to hot to a corner. Once you get where you are going, then make up for lost time. It sounds restrictive to do the trailer thing, but it really isn't you just have to get use to it.

Photo's look great, the trailer really suits the bike. Was the install a big thing, looks like you'll have to do some trips away this spring ,shame its still aways off yet for you cold weather northern Hemispherical folks. Power won't be a problem, stopping, well its like anything you just got learn to ride it that way , if you can master a Harley towing a trailer then the 14 will be a pleasure.
Congratulations slidderhd the set up looks very professional the 14 is lots of things to lots of folks each to there own , want to see more photos of these trips you'll be going on

Ride safe and God Bless

Wow, Ive never seen that before on a 14. Looks like a death trap to me. Its the turning that would get me. the 14 dont turn like a cruiser does.

It looks like it could be a lot shorter. Maybe the length keeps it tracking straight or softens the bouncing on the hitch. I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you take it easy while you're pulling it. You won't be in traffic much with it and I'm sure other motorists will notice you when you are. Put some orange flags on it. If they have half a brain they will understand why you are moving a little slower.

We plan on being in Deals Gap the weekend of April 8 thru 11. For those that don't know. It is a stretch of road called Hwy 129 that runs from Marysville, Tn. to Fontana Lake N.C. 318 turns in 11 miles. Tight, tight ride.

The event is called Slaying the Dragon.
It will be held at Iron Horse Campgound,
Robinsville, NC

i personally would not pull a trailer like this. although my father has a lot of miles on his two sleeper popup he pulls behind his venture.

i would never assume pulling a trailer would be a death trap. its all about the mentality. i had this same conversation with some guys when looking for a hitch for the G35. (i don't have it yet, but need to make sure the when i get a 'car' its gonna pull the track bike.) anything can pull anything with the right mindset. a geo metro can pull a suburban, just not very fast and would need a few miles to stop. ;0)

edit: case in point... and pretty funny to me!:

when in doubt, slow down. no one ever hit something by going too slow.

318 corners 11 miles, worth going to the other side of the world just to see it and ride it. bet there are lots of crashes there and cops ??????????
One day I'll come to the states and buy or hire a bike and head off for a month or two and that little road will be on my list.

Pulling a trailer means you havee to keep your head .
Like riding two up , it will handle a little different and take a little longer to stop but trailer vrakes are not needed . Most of these trailers are not much heavier than full size passenger. I have pulled a TRAILER with my ST1300 for a couple of years now . I would love to set up my ZX14 to do this on a rare camping trip. Might get to sell my ST1300 then ( not ! ) .

my babies but I have traded in the ZX14 for a 09 Candy apple green one

I need more infor on the hitch?
How do you take it off ?
can we have a pic without the trailer on the hitch ?
would you need to keep the rear fender as I have a fender eliminater
I have some questions and will try to PM you

Lost in TX and I dont want to be found ,

2005 GL1800 Sold to another to enjoy
2006 ST1300 Gone but not forgotten
2009 ZX14 Also gone and will be replaced someday
some of the best of both worlds

imrubicon, I can get closeups of the hitch attaching points. Let me see what I can do. There are only 4 bolts holding it on and two of them are the exhaust canister bolts. Very easy to remove and I have the trailer cable tucked under the seat.
