clubhouse chatter:
Five Elements of a Good Shooting Position
1. Bone Support
2. Muscle Relaxation
3. Correct Sight Alignment [i like a nice deep v with a flat post]
4. Breathing Control [there is a natural respiratory pause to be exploited]
5. Trigger Control [practice, let the break surprise you]

Reloader Recipe Tip #1
The .416 Rigby master recipe
Norma case (7-step prep)
114grns H4831sc
350grn Barnes Triple Shock
Seat to 1st relief groove
Roll crimp lightly (high pressure load)
*only recommended for experienced heavy bore shooters. Recoil will dislocate shoulder if the rifle is fired from an incorrect position.
*only recommended for the Ruger Magnum Safari Action OR STRONGER.
*THIS IS A MAX LOAD (runs about 12 grns over max book/compressed load)
I wrote this recipe while stationed At Elmendorf AFB, AK. Lots of great hunting and fishing. I have shot this load about 300 times through my rigby. Takes down critters nicely.
The Rigby was designed for use on heavy African Game and is one of the very few caliber's on planet earth that can penetrate an elephant from stern to brain for the reverse brain shot, or 'threading the needle'. When loads to maximum case pressure capacity, the Rigby will push a 350 grain projectile at 2788 feet per second. That is .308 velocity ranges easily achieved, but with a 350 grain projectile. Impact on game is funny as shit. Legs go fuckin flyin. Heads evaporate. Fuckin bears flip backwards. :)))

Regarding your .416 load:
Data given indicates 6K ft-lbs of energy at muzzle and a Taylor Index at muzzle of 58.
Standard .416 Rigby loading (popular hunting load) for a 400 grain bullet shows 5K ft-lbs of energy at muzzle and a Taylor index at muzzle of 57.
Not much difference in Index even at muzzle; Taylor index, as you may know, is a measure of "knock-down" impact on game.
At 100 yards the standard 400 grain load still has an index value of nearly 52 although velocity has dropped from muzzle 2400 ft per sec to 2184 at that range. If construction and materials are the same, the 400 grain bullet has a higher ballistic density than the 350.
Do you know the velocity of your load at 100 yards? That would be crucial to retaining its Taylor Index rating.
How accurate is your load compared to the standard and how "easy" to shoot? Shots beyond 100 yards are rare indeed on dangerous big game. Any brush to go through in AK that an extra 50 grains might be an advantage for?
Common ratings recommend a Taylor index at your anticipated shooting range of at least 50-125 for rhino, elephant, etc.
Grizzly bear recommendations fall between 20 and 40 on the index. Lion, tiger, etc (dangerous thin skinned game) rate 40 -50 on the Taylor index recommendation table.
I agree with the admonition to always carry enough gun but am skeptical of maximum loads for many reasons including the conditions explicated above.
.416 Rigby is more than enough gun for Grizzly, then, but just inside the needed "impact" for rhino at 100 yards.
For reference: Taylor index for 470 Nitro Express (500 grains) at 100 yards is over 64! And the venerable 50 BMG (admittedly not a game hunting rifle) comes in with a Taylor index of 146 with a 750 grain bullet at a range of 100 yards showing a retained velocity of 2681 ft per sec. That's just about 100 feet per second slower than your .416 at the muzzle.
Of course, you could probably get away with hunting with a 50 in AK; might be tiring humping it though the brush though.
I wonder if the 146 Index is enough gun for T-Rex at 100 yards.

See its about velocity. Look at the construction of the Barnes triple shock. Hollow point made of copper solid. Solid copper base. I get wayyy more knockdown than with the 400grn bullets. All o then are pretty decent at the 400 grn weight. But none give performance and terminal impact like the 350grn Barnes triple shock. I saw pressure signs like dishes primers and sticky bolt life with 118grns. backed off to accuracy. 100yds velocity is still at above 2400fps. Padow. Impact. Been there. Done that. Nothing stands against that load.

I have an armalite ar-50 single shot as well. I run the night force 3.5-15x55 with the NPR-2 reticle. Me and john from nightforce designed that 2moa reticle for destruction. Once you force yourself to think in mil dots, its over. :)) out of my .50, I load the hornady 750 grain A-max bullet. Took a Kodiak bears entire shoulder and leg off at 610yds. Point blank range.
The rigby is plenty for t-Rex. Velociraptors and private planes. :)

2 mil hash mark = 2" for every 100yds of distance see. You shoot your load, know the drop down cold. Say, deer at 710yds (say 36" drop/.300 ultra /200grn accubond/ 87.5grns IMR7828). Dan Lilja made me a 32" stick in a phat straight that gets em cookin.
So, we know that first hash mark at 710 covers 14.2" of bullet drop. Drop to second hash bang dead. You do the math. I was breaking the trigger with a slow steady squeeze at the bottom of my natural respiratory pause. Mines stretched to about 7secs. Poof. Gone for real. Shot destroyed skull plate, I was angling down at a particular degree. Full distance without slope was closer to 760.
Usually I rarely take any trophies. I grew up hunting meat to eat. This thing was just sittin there so I threw it in the boat. Always a meat hunter. If a trophy falls in your lap sure. But I hunt to eat.

I grew up on Haida Gwaii. My mother was Haida. Hunting and fishing to feed my family has been a way of life. Some years I shop a lot less than others! :)
