I've a mind to be the gunea pig for the 14R.

My .02 is, since the pump has an embedded filter (non-replaceable) in the pump plastic housing, then this external "sock" filter should become a regular maintenance interval item.

My cycle is at 2 years old now, thats long enough for me.

I'm gonna buy one and see it if fits the '12 14R.

This part arrived today.

Im surprised, it's only a couple square inches in size. I was expecting bigger (from the photos).

I've not attempted to open the tank on my '12 14R yet. Gonna look at some exploded views now (shoulda done that first, huh?), to see if it might fit.

Yah, well, never mind. This does not fit my 14R, from a view of the fuel pump fiche.

Interesting, tho, that it appears it will fit a couple other cycles of mine :)

Folks on other forums, that are testing for potential FI issues, are making a routine test (every valve check) for puel pump output delivery volume and / or pressure.

They use the amount and pressure to determine if a problem is developing with a clogged filter.

Our pump is ~$260 + shipping, so I'm not making *that* a regular change-out replacement item.

So, the fuel delivery check seems a good idea to me.

Stupid engineers! They could not design in a replaceable filter cartridge? Dam stupid...

The '12+ 14R service manual specifies a fuel flow rate (67 mL, or 2.3 oz. or more, for 3 seconds of pressure), and an average fuel pressure (43 psi at idle) for a correctly working fuel pump (pages 3-120..3-123).

I believe 43 psi is considered to be a "moderate" FI system pressure, not "high".

I think I would attempt to determine both conditions before declaring an expensive part (this pump) to be failed.

The flow test is easy, the pressure test harder. I'm guessing a "single ended" pressure gauge can be obtained, placed on the output fuel line, and then turn on the cycle's power (but not start) for that 3 sec "pre-start" pressurization, and then measure that.

Fuel pressure gauges are cheap at your local parts house Meb. I use mine pretty often for various vehicle types.

Yup, thanks, Mav.

I bought one, a "pro" kit with adaptors, Actron CP7838, commonly available locally and online.

I'm wondering / pondering about how to break into the high pressure line to get a measurement, without cutting the fuel line. I dont know how to do that yet.

I'm looking at the fiche for the fuel pump, and the flex line from the pump output to the injection manifold input, has a high pressure "clip" fitting at either end. How do I get on that with this tester?

Any advice?

I think what I need, is a used fuel line p/n 51044-0771, and a used / failed / broke fuel pump.

I will cut the output tube from the pump, and a clip-on connection from the hose, and from those two parts, make an in-line adaptor that "clips" into the existing system.

Anyone wanna donate parts, for a team "floating" adaptor? I build it, test it, and make it available on-request.

This way, we dont cut into our existing fuel lines...

Edit:

I bought a used HP fuel line on ebay. I'll cut into this, and put the tester kit in-line using it. Then, clip it into the cycle plumbing when testing, and put the original line back in-line when done. I'll let you know.

Sorry Meb I didn't see your post. Yeah all I did was bought a short piece of fuel injection hose and made a T type setup with the gauge on the branch of the T. I just used the fuel injection style clamps and clamped directly onto the metal tube portion of the clip connections on the rail and tank output and it sealed just fine for what I was trying to do. I left the gauge and fuel line in this configuration for other sport bike fuel pressure diagnosis procedures.

2012 ZX14r Kawasaki Shop Manual, page 3-126, fuel filter cleaning....fuel filter is built into the fuel pump and cannot be cleaned or checked. If the fuel filter is suspected of clogging or being damaged replace it with the fuel
pump as a set.
Kawasaki needs to redesign the fuel pump assembly with a replaceable fuel filter.

If you have a warranty or extended warranty on your motorcycle, fiddling with the sock filter will void your covered warranty on the fuel pump assembly, according to the C14 guys.

If the ZX14 has the internal paper type fuel filter like the 10r has in the photo above, it may dry out after being removed from the fuel tank and clogs the fuel pump.

After cleaning the sock filter-pump failure.
