Rear sets - Vortex or Sato
06/24/10 10:34 AM

I'm thinking of taking the 14 to another track day, and would like to replace the rear sets in order to get things a bit higher off the ground and hopefully to improve the shifting.

I see that Sato and Vortex are both popular. The Vortex seems to be a bit more versatile in terms of positioning. Most of the track day guys and racers seem to use Vortex.

Does anyone have any advice on which one might be better? Anyone tried both and have a preference?

Thanks! -bg

Vortex only because replacement parts are easy to get, trackside vendors may have the parts on site (pegs, shift rods) I think you will also need the rear brake light switch in order a rear brake light in order for the brake light to activate if you only use the rear brake. I passed on the switch because I never use the rear brake only even on the street. Beware the pegs will chew your boots all to hell and your shin if you are not careful

Thanks, willidx4.

Yes, I was aware of the brake light switch. I'll probably get it, as I only use the rear brake to let the people behind me know that I'm slowing down.

Does the Vortex set give you a more positive control over the shifting than the stock set? -bg

Not really the stock CBR linkgage had no "slop" at all everything meshed real well. I guess it depends on the how good the stock setup was from what I can recall the 14 was good also so not sure if they will feel any better than the stock setup.I can tell you the larger pegs provide tons more grip and won't fold up on you when you go down. I have a size 12 foot so the larger pegs also helped me get my foot position aswell

You could just buy aftermarket adjuster plates and move your pegs (the entire oem rear set) up to 1" higher and 1.5" back, that's what I have on my 14.

Mass, any way you could take a closeup picture of your rearsets?

SATO rearsets are nice but they are pricey and replacement parts sometimes hard to get a hold of. The vortex are nice, easy to adjust, very durable (they hold up pretty good when the go down) and you can get parts just about anywhere. For the money I'd go with Vortex.

Thanks, heathun.

Any difference in the quality or ease of shifting between the stock and the Vortex? -bg

Mass: Could I ask how tall you are?

I'm 6'1" and 175 lbs. in shorts.

I have Vortex rear sets on my track 750 but would highly recommend not using anything with hard pegs (bolted with no flex) on a zx14 due to the limited lean angle and the higher chance of dragging hard parts and resulting in a low-side crash. Mine has the rear lifted with a shock spacer, longer dog-bone linkage, re-machined axle slot (my rear axle is 28 mm), taller tire (190/55) and much stiffer rear shock and I still managed to drag the clutch cover last time I took it out. I was also scraping my toe sliders too much with the oem rear sets on the highest/ furthest back holes on the plates from the link I posted and I also yanked the cruiser pegs long ago for a set of Oberon pegs in race cut profile.

I can't find a better pic, but this is at Monticello NY a few weeks ago (second rider on the grid) and you can see where my toes are on the Vortex rear sets and that's not achievable on the 14

If you go down, aftermarket rear sets will protect the bike much better,
just can't be the cause of the crash.

I'm out of town but will take some when I get back,
we're riding at NJMP on Mon and Tue (Thunderbolt both days).

When adjusted properly for you shifts are much better and the quality is better. Like Mass stated though with the 14 I wouldn't recommend the solid mount pegs, if you run out of lean angle it will lift the rear off the ground and spit you off.

Thanks, guys!

I think I'll get the aftermarket adjuster plates and move the pegs back and up and remove the lower fairings, and we'll see how she goes. -bg
