Is this mount for ABS?
09/17/14 8:51 AM

I was wondering what the mount with the large hole and two smaller threaded holes on my right Ohlins fork bottom was for. There is a similar shape with no holes on the R fork bottom of my OEM fork for my Gen1.

Front wheel speed sensor for ktac/abs. At least I think so anyway. It appears to be the same size and shape.

Yes it is. Remember, first year we had an empty bay where the ABS box sits next to the battery. So first gen already had ABS-euro models. As you can see, we had blanks not needing to be machined yet until 2012. Then came the k-skid and the mode switch. There was that dual-auto-skid more or less at the sub openings and ign curve you (cough) had no control over. Once the mode switch came, then the intervention tripled as attacking subs/ign/fuel. 14 trivia to the best of my recollection.

Thanks, guys. thought so.

There is a third hole there on that buttress above the damping adjuster. What do you suppose that's for...maybe a place to mount a wire retainer?

Possibly. I'd safety wire a loop, run the wire around the sensor cable, stick the wire end in the goop glue, push it into the hole and let it dry. No heavy bolt, no cable strap, no threads to tap.

Got a question here Rook...aside from that beautiful fork...where the heck is the fender stantion? The forks I was gonna get had that precast on there...like the 14.Didn't see any small hole either in the pics on their site?

...where the heck is the fender stantion?

They bolt on. Maybe the fork bottoms are the same for other bikes Ohlins makes the forks for like a ZX10, maybe. So instead of making a whole new fork bottom with dif brackets, they make the same fork bottom to fit many and supply bolt on fender brackets. I have them on now but they were not installed when I took the pic. You can see wofzx's back front fender bracket in the lower left of his pic above.

BTW, Grn, Ohlins + pinch bolts + fender brackets are about 2 oz lighter than OEM with same.

Mine came with a insert/filler, does yours not have that?

No. I bought them second hand. No filler. (I did get a 10 mm extended stroke though!) I planned to make a cover out of aluminum and paint it gold. Does the Ohlins blockoff plate fill the sensor hole under there as well as cover it?

Not sure, I'll take it off this weekend and have a look. If you want I'll let you borrow it for a bit so you can copy/make it.

You're awesome, man. Thanks but I can figure it out from the fork bottom. rather than take it off, just reach your finger around to the inside of the fork bottom and fell if the hole is filled. I'm just curious. I'm sure anyone could find a piece of rubber and stick it in the back and that's prolly what I'll do.

I got the other fork in tonight. The + < PRELOAD > - sign on top is at a different angle on both sides. I could have turned the fork 180 degrees but then the sticker on the upper tube would have been facing in. Oh wel, prolly have the caps anodized gold some day anyway.

Thanks, wfozx14. That cover is nice. Mine won't be as fancy but I'll just cut a piece of aluminum and drill some holes.

My OEM forks were 24mm above the Top yoke clamps. The SM says they should be 21.5mm. After installing the Ohlins forks to the same height as the OEM forks were from the factory (24mm), They look like this.

About 1mm of tub is showing above the clipon. Does this look right?

They look about the same. I set the rear shock at stock height.

and what torque specs do you suggest for the top yoke clamp and the lower triple tree clamp? The Ohlins instructions say, '20 Nm for the top yoke clamps. 10 Nm for the lower clamps.' One thing, it makes no sense to trque the uppers tighter than the lowers and another thing, 10 Nm is only about 7 ft lbs.

Rook, I don't remember what I did. I imagine I did whatever Ohlins recommended. I just looked at my mounting instructions and says the same as you have. I would go with that.

thanks for the fork height pic, wfozx14. I looked at mine from the same angle as you have shown and it looks like mine are about a milimeter lower. I don't think a few mm this way or that matters on the 14. A lot of people lowered the front by raising the OEM forks and I heard of no problems. There was an increased risk of scraping the oil pan on wheelie touchdown and dragging lower fairings in corners or rubbing the inside of the fender if you lowered too much.

Anyways, you can't lower your front end much by raising Ohlins forks. You'd be clamping on the part of the tube that is flattened off if you went ~1/4" lower than where we have ours.

I set the rear shock at stock height.

That was my next question. I see the piston shaft can be set to be taller or shorter with the nuts at the bottom of the shaft. Do you mean that you set the piston shaft so that the distance between the top ball joint and the bottom ball joint were the same distance as the OEM shock?

Subject: Re: FGRT 807 tq specs

I bought my FGRT 807s second hand from a guy who purchased form you.
Could you help me out with torque specs for the top yoke clamp and the lower
triple tree clamp? The Ohlins instructions say:

"Tighten the fork crowns with the following torque: Upper fork crown 20
Nm and lower fork crown 10 Nm."

That doesn't seem right to me. 15 ft lbs on top and only 7 ft lbs
bottom??? Can't be right.

Thanks,

Oh, This is a 2008 Kawasaki ZX-14 the forks were installed to.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These torque number are correct for the FGRT807 as well as its replacement
the FGRT207

Those are the numbers I would recommend

Dan

Well, I'll be damned. Four bolts on the lower fork clamps 7 ft lbs each one! I might go a pound or two tighter. Don't think I'll be doing any wheelies right away.

I also emailed Ohlins to verify the torque of the fork clamps. SHEESH, 7 ft lbs!

Here's what they had to say:

Comments: What are the recommended fork clamp torque specs for FGRT-807 forks on a 2008 Kawasaki ZX-14? The spec in the installation book for the lower clamp is 10 Nm. The spec for OEM lower fork clamp is 30 Nm.

Hello Daron. Thank you for your email.
Always follow the Öhlins fork manual mounting instructions including torque spec recommendations. The stock OEM forks are a different design and have their own torque specifications.
Thank you, Jerry

yep. 7 ft lbs, lower clamps. ok. Maybe I will do a wheelie again..... some day.

Yes Rook I set the ohlin shock at the same length as stock. I misspoke when I said ride height. What springs are you using front and back?

What springs are you using front and back?

IDK? All I know is that the front is sprung for a guy who weighs in at 220 so it might be too stiff for me. Feels nice and cushy when I press it down on the stand. I cant ride it yet to tell.

The issue of spring length on the back never even came up so I guess I will have to see how that goes too. I have no idea what that spring length is and the guy I bought thee from is in the hospitol getting back surgery right now. If I feel that I need to find out what these measurements are for sure, I'll give ya a yell.

I set the ohlin shock at the same length as stock.

Thanks. I'll do the same but I think it would be cool to lift the rear up a half inch or so. IDK how that would effect the bikes geometry but seems it would be similar to lowering the front which many have done in the past with stock forks.

thanks, wfo. I see I will have some research to do over winter. Whole new world of info. More money to spend! lol have to give that a peruse when I get a chance. Maybe the springs I have are just fine. For now, I have GOT to get my baby rollin for just a few weeks before the snow flies.

OOH BOY....definitely, wfozx14! I will give you a yell if I need those. If I feel the springs are too hard to compensate for with damping settings, I'll be messing with that this winter. Pay ya for shipping, of course. Thanks so much!
