I was out on a ride this morning and an approaching motorcyclist tapped the top of his helmet. He was wearing fluorescent gear and was on a sport tourer, not sure but I think it might have been a cop. What does the helmet tap mean?

Cop ahead. I usually flash my headlights so the other motorists can see from a distance. Don't let the cops see yuo tapping your head.

No, but after I SAW a cop a short distance back, definitely I signal those coming at me headed straight for the speed trap. Don't let the cop see you giving the signal....obstructing justice.

Yep if coming towards you, cop infront somewhere. If Infront of you, group ride etc, slow down, usually due to LEO presence.

It actually means to think about what you're doing-how fast you're going etc. and has come to mean watch out for the police up ahead.

Weird, I'm pretty sure this was a motorcycle cop, very unusual to see one out in the country on a farm road as they are only big city typically but they were having a bicycle rally that morning so he might have been hired as off duty to watch over the cyclists. I saw him again later coming the other direction and he waved and motored on. IDK

If you're in the U.S., it's legal to flash your lights or tap your helmet. If you get pulled over and asked about it, just say you're participating in First Amendment protected free speech in protest of a government policy. Don't make it personal or obstructing, just protest... because that is protected. If you admit to warning other drivers, it could be construed as obstruction, so don't admit to that.

I like that but I think you might avoid a conflict by telling the cop you had a bee in your helmet or something like that. Here in Wisconsin, it is illegal to photograph or film cops -period. You can't do it, it would automatically not be accepted as evidence in court and you might actually be convicted of a crime yourself with the evidence you provided. BUt then the judge would have to watch the video wouldn't he? Can you believe that shit?
