SW Motech Rack with Givi V35 Bags??
03/10/12 3:52 PM

Wondering if anyone has fitted this to there 2012? I just picked it up, marked to work for the 2012, but I can't get the bags to clear the exhaust. Either I'm doing something wrong or I'm going to have to send them back to Twisted Throttle...

Thanks for any help,

Kevin

The exhaust is higher by a tad on the 2012 than pre-2012, thats probably the problem.

But I had CT-Duals on my 2008, and the V35s cleared them just fine.

Are you sure you put the rack brackets on right? Instructions say to leave them slightly loose and put the rack on and move it around if you have clearance issues, then tighten.

Please keep us posted on this.. I'll be bummed if they don't clear. I have Givi E360s and was about to buy racks. They better fit! I guess I'll be fabbing my own rack mounts if they don't.

The problem is that each rack connects in 4 places. The front two, exhaust hanger area are adjustable. The two in the rear, bolt under the seat and rear license plate bracket are not adjustable. The rack sits only about an inch above the back of the pipe. The bag will not go onto the rack, I would need to move the rack up or the pipe down about 2 inches or so. It's a great setup, nice bags, but I can't see how to make them fit. I'm not even sure I can move the exhaust enough if I fab up a hanger. I'm waiting on a Kawi center stand and I'm worried that even if I can lower the exhaust enough to clear the bags, I'll then have trouble with the center stand not folding up high enough.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm out of ideas.

Thanks,

Kevin

guys on COG site have fabricated a 2" hanger to lower the muffler. You just have to loosen the clamps at the collector exit and rotate the pipe "outward" a little.

Privateer.... Anyway to know if I will still be able to use the center stand. It's currently backordered, but it's definitely something I want on the bike. I would hate to lose clearance cause the pipe is lowered.

Has anyone had any luck mounting luggage to a 2012 yet?

Hank,

The rack fits perfectly. The bags won't fit onto the rack cause of the size and height of the pipes. I just made a 1.5" drop bracket (used 1/8" bar stock) and dropped the pipes. It's unnoticeable when the bags are on. If I'm not using the bags I just move the pipes back up to there original spot.

Let me know if you need any help with the racks.

Just curious why swap back and forth? Do you think the pipes look awkward when lowered the 1.5", or do the hangers you made look "less than beautiful" with the bags off?

I'd like to see a picture as well...

The switching is just me, I like the look of the pipes in the stock position better. Here are some pictures of the bike in touring mode. I don't normally ride with the bags, just for trips.

Here are a few pictures of the pipes.

Here is where the bracket is mounted.

Here is a rough cut of the bracket.

Hope this helps.

I emailed SW Motech and asked if they would be releasing racks for the 2012 and got this response:

"Hello,

unfortunately we did not construct a side carrier for the ZZR1400 2012.
The reason is the exhaust - that is true.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best Regards"

Which is a bummer. I guess we're on our own to get the exhaust out of the way.

I have a 2012-R and have fitted the SW-Motech side racks for the V-35 bags. The catalog says they are for 2006-2011 however they fit the rear sub frame perfectly. Only problem was exhaust clearance so I fabricated hangers which lowered the stock exhaust by about 3 inches measured at the rear of the exhaust - plenty of clearance between bags and exhaust. I just installed the factory center stand which fits fine but hangs slightly lower due to rubber stop on lower right exhaust. Also the handgrip supplied with the center stand can't be used because the left bag rack uses same locating points. Not a serious issue as there are plenty of places to grab to help lift rear of ZX14R. I am 69 years young and I don't expect to have any issues with clearance. I have also added SW-Motech rear trunk mounting kit for Givi trunk. This was removed from my 2007 ZX14 and fits fine.

I am a noob here too, but I have a request of site admin.

May we please have a "sticky" thread where luggage mounting solutions are discussed and solved?

We could start with moving this post into it, I believe it's information is valuable to me and likely others.

Thanks for considering it.

RUNNING LIST OF PARTS NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT:

1. GPT.08.161.15000.B -- SW-MOTECH Alu-Rack Toprack (Kawasaki ZX14 / ZZR1400, '06-), black - for Givi, Hepco-Becker, & Krauser topcases.

2. GPT.00.152.405 -- SW-MOTECH Alu-Rack Topcase Adapter Plate (GIVI / Kappa Monokey).

3. 36040-0059-H8 -- European Tail Piece (black).

4. GIVI Topcase -- [I chose the V46.]

5. KFT.08.514.150 -- SW-MOTECH Quick-Lock Sidecarrier (Kawasaki ZX14 / ZZR1400) Contour Carrier for Givi V35 PLX cases, '08 - '11.

6. Givi V35NT -- Givi V35 PLX Sidecases/Saddlebags (pair) - 35 liters/case Clear Lens.

7. Mounting bracket to lower the exhaust pipes by about 1.5".

8. Basic sockets and wrenches, and a Dremmel to make cutouts for mounting brackets of the sideplates -- see Youtube video (parts 1 and 2) by TwistedThrottle.

In response to your inquiry regarding SW Motech Rack with Givi V35 bags, your list is partially correct. Items 1,2,3 are correct. No. 3 can be ordered from either local Kawasaki dealer or from Twisted Throttle. It is the same European tail cover I used on my '07. Item 4: I am using Givi E460 top case. I don't know about larger size. I'd be concerned about too much weight on rear sub frame when loaded and possible handling effects. Item 5: Get KFT.08.514.150 It is newer design and will ONLY WORK with Givi V35 bags! The V35 bags are designed to hug the sides of the ZX. The other mount is older and works with other Givi bags which due to design tend to extend further out from the side. Item 6 is not needed with KFT.08.514.150. Item 7 is not for these racks.

SUGGESTION: Get 3 lock set for Givi bags and trunk so same key will open all three. Get from Givi dealer.

Hope this helps.....

John

zx14traveler: With respect to the E460, the Givi website has a picture of 2 helmets with word capacity above the picture. Do you find that you are able to fit two (2) full size helmets inside the E460 (like an Arai that covers the entire face)?

lawlist: I have an Arai Quantum 2 which fits in E460 with enough extra room that should allow another Arai to fit but I have never tried to do so.......

Two helmets will fit in the givi N45 but not the e46. The E460 has a more oval lid.

The bolt that goes through the bottom right-hand side of the bracket that is welded to the exhaust pipe on the 2012 ZX-14R needs to be removed in order to drop the right side exhaust pipe about 1.5 inches or more so that it clears the Givi V35 hard luggage. Once lowered, however, the bolt cannot be re-inserted without first cutting a notch out of the bracket -- I used an angle grinder to cut a notch out of the top of the bracket and the bolt passes through the top portion of the bracket. It is important to note that if the exhaust pipes are lowered too much, then the mud cover on the bottom of the bike won't fit either.

I just got and installed the last part that was on back-order from Twisted Throttle / SW-Motech. The Corbin backrest does not fit with the Givi topcase and Sw-Motech toprack installed.

Second draft, and final draft with paint. I placed a rectangular red reflector on the back of each bracket (not visible in the photographs), which helps make the entire job look like a factory install -- i.e., very professional looking (in my opinion).

Thank you all very much for the guidance in setting up the luggage brackets and side/top-cases for the 2012 ZX-14R. This thread made the difference between buying the Ninja versus another model / brand of motorcycle.

For anyone else who is interested in having the Corbin backrest and the Givi topcase installed at the same time, here is my final version of a home-made bracket. The rear edge of topcase is about 1" away from the backrest, and the topcase opens hanging over the top of the backrest without touching. The column cap (u-shaped bracket) that I used was 4" in width. Ideally, about a 3" width for the column cap probably would have been better (i.e., to lower the height of the topcase about an inch), but 3" is not a standard size and would probably have to be fabricated by a welding shop, or perhaps by bolting together two (2) "L"-shaped brackets to form a u-shape.
