So, my son picked up a very nice 2003 Z1000 this Friday. Black, corbin seat, Muzzy pipe, PC3, ASV levers, stock parts and a lot of extras. Rode it home 2 hours and it ran great. Sat all day Saturday. Then on Sunday starts misfiring and coughing. Now it doesn't start. Cranks fine just no boom... I'm pretty sure his last fill up on Friday at ARCO gave him a load of water. While it was mixed it ran. But it sat Saturday so I think the water settled to the bottom of the tank where the pump picked it up. So, he's had it 3 days and it's off to the shop. Ugh...
Fookin ARCO. We usually don't go there but his fuel was low and it was the only station in the area...
I'll let you know what we find out.

Welp.... I told the son to get some Starter Fluid to see if it ran on that. He got home, put the key in, and with no starter fluid applied....it started right up. Ran it until warm, then took it to the gas station and ran about 7 miles. No problems whatsoever, no coughs, no stutters. Ran perfect. Sooo either he managed to suck most of the water through the system on Sunday, orrr we have an intermittent electrical fault. I sure hope it was bad gas. Hes going to ride it within pushing distance for a tank of gas and we'll see.

Seafoam is supposed to eliminate moisture but with bad gas, I imagine that would be a lot more than your typical condensation problem. I'm pretty sure I was told never to use starting fluid on a fuel injected engine. I hope it was bad gas too and you guys are done with the problem.

So, it appears that his fuel pump is going out. Instead of buying a pump assembly for $360, I found a German made direct replacement pump motor for $60. Lifetime warranty too. He has to take the pump assy out of the tank and remove and replace the pump motor. Shouldn't be too difficult for a future Rocket Scientist.
I'll let you know how it goes.
