2014 Exhaust choice
04/19/14 7:01 PM

Hi all,

I have a 2014 in green/black.
I am researching end cans to put on the bike
I want Akrapovic, however they do not seem to make a carbon fibre option on their pipes, I want carbon, not TI.

So on my list now is Graves, Yoshi, Scorpion.

I do not want a loud exhaust, I just want a nice deep note as droning will annoy me to no end. This makes be go against the Yoshis as in my experience, they are loud and droney..

I still think the Akrapovics looks the best, in terms of shape. I just really don't want TI.

A suggestion I always have, black out your heel plates.

Akra makes a carbon fiber can.

I am wrong I guess. Just went to Akra's website and the carbon fiber is not available to 2012&up bikes....

Graves cans and AKRA header were my second choice to the brocks CT duals.

Akra header with Graves was my second choice too. Akra full duals was my first, but I'm not too fond of their current muffler offering. So this is where I ended up, Akrapovic header, Yosh mid-pipes, Akra Carbon Hex (I can be a bit stubborn). They, (Akra), said no, I said "fine - I'll do it myself".
Akra with Yoshimura slip-ons was in the running too.

This was exactly the topic I've been looking for....

I'm on a New '12 C14, and I want to upgrade to a FULL Dual zx-14 system.
If any of you have seen the single OEM potatoe cannon on the c14, you KNOW why.

Muzzys, Area P, and Brocks are off the list. I don't like the "old-style" oval cans on those.
Yoshi too.

I'm with the OP: I want full CF Cans, and I don't want stoopid loud.
I intend to install, or at least buy cans with Db killer insert optional, to keep the drone
to a minimum.
I'm not after max power -- I want FULL dual system, and I want a LOOK.

I'm very interested in the Graves Slipons with an Akra Header, but not sure if the
graves mids and Akra header will mate-up correctly.
Anybody ACTUALLY got this system on their bikes, and knows that it fits??

Where are you guys buying the Akra Headers from? Looks like a limited choice of vendors on the Graves pipes...

Rikkitik: I like your setup! So....you got Akra Hex Slipons, matched them with yosh mids, and then to an Akra header for a '12+ Zx14?? Any issues with mate-up? Any special fabrication??

Thanks guys.

Thanks :)
I went with the Yosh mids because they move the mufflers about 3" forward of where an Akra '08-'11 system would be. The Yosh mids are 57mm (aka 1 1/4") and the cans I chose are 60mm. I bought some SS tubing from McMaster and schizzed out a couple adapter sleeves on the lathe. It would be just as easy to have the local muffler shop stretch the tubes. I wanted to control the fit, so I made the sleeves.

RIkki -

Were u able to source the Mids and Cans separately?
If so, where from?
Usually only see these sold as sets.
Curious.
thanks,

GR,
Yes all parts are available separately. Yoshimura has just about everything you could ask for in stock. Very helpful too (unlike some dealings in years past). Akrapovic parts are better sourced from online distributors, riders-resource, and ridersdiscount (both are on ebay, I think they source from Tucker/Rocky). Both had items available that Akra did not. Akrapovic is helpful too but, by their own admission, do not have a very big warehouse.

Riki --

Was the AKRA header you sourced the 12-14 model?

i don't see that Akra offers this SS set for any other years, unless they've discontinued?

I've got a line on a set of slip-on Akras like yours for 08-11 ZX-14, but not sure if I need to match
the year for the Header system??

Need your input, and thanks in advance.

Yes, the header is the '12-'14 model.
The '08 slip system could probably be modified to fit, just depends on how much you want to take on
I'm pretty sure the spigot diameter (slip-joint)is the same, but the angle at the collector is different between the two generations. It appeared to me that one mid (the right side?) would need to be angled more, while the other side angled less (straightened). For me, that, and them being positioned farther back was the deciding point.
The Graves or Yosh slips would be a "bolt and go". The Yosh mufflers are 16" and are a little short(IMHO)for the 14's size (visually). The Graves system looked nice, but they had nothing for pics other than the 3/4 view and the Youtube "ride-by" video. When I called them they weren't particularly helpful either.
FWIW, the mufflers I chose were standard issue for ZX10R's and Gixers, so the parts are pretty common. As best as I could tell from cross referencing Akro parts lists. The muffler, sleeves, and hanger clamps used on their zx14 slip-ons are only used on 14's and Yamaha FJ's.
Hope the above info is helpful

Hey Rikki --

If you see this...shoot me an email @ acooper180ATgeemailDOTcom.

I've been waffling back and forth for over a month on what to buy, and need some additional input, if you are willing
to help me?

Curious about the Akra Cans you chose vs. the ZX14 variants.

thks.

Big Thanks to Rikki for all his patience and input helping me with a tough decision!

I pulled the trigger on an 09 ZX14 Header with Dual Akra Carbon SlipOns for my c14
Going to have the Cat cut-out and re-welded by a pro, and a few other mild tweaks, Guhl reflash
and I'll be set!

Will post pics for posterity when I'm done.

cheers guys!

Thought I'd report back with my exhaust install: had a local pro welder cut-out the cats and re-weld the collector pipe.
Here's the results. I'm very pleased!

Big thanks to Rikkitik for his advice and patience.
