55 or 50 Rear Tire
11/09/14 10:43 AM

So yes, we all know the 55 turns quicker.

I'm more than pleased with the handling of this bike, but will the 55 change the speedo reading, what about less revs on the highway?

I'd also like to know if the 50 will be more reluctant to squaring off, like if you have to spend a lot of time on the freeway.

I've got a 55 PR4 on mine...so far...with around 4K miles...this tire looks REALLY good.It isn't squared off at all...sa'll
in the wrist and shifting and braking(unless it's a very cheap tire brand). ...the 14R just MAY have an ECU program to realign any tire height difference hidden in there.Mine is still 3 MPH lower than the speedo shows...with the 50/or 55 on there.

Interesting. It would need to have a tire height sensor to do that...or else the speed sensor reads differently than the Gen1.

I think a 55 squares off slower. They seem to have a more oblique shaped tread when new so it wears to a round shape before ending up flat in the middle.

..yup,I think so too.But I also think that a lot of these tire wear issues happen with lots of aggressive riding style.Stopping, shifting up and down, and fast pace.So far at around 4K...this PR4 is really wearing nicely.

LOL. NOt so with the Super Coursas. I didn't expect they would. Glad I got the 55 but its looking a little worn across the center after less than 1000 miles. Not a lot worse than other sport riding tires I've tried. That's the price you pay riding on the street with track tires.

Any of the street tires designed for specifically 'street and track' are gonna wear more quickly than an ST tire. It's the compounds.(you knew that;))....Plus...those track/street combo tires are gonna wear more quickly down the center with a 55...or it's just more noticeable with that taller profile...?I would rarely late brake entering a corner...but that definitely will scrub the center down quicker than braking smoother(and sooner) approaching, setting a line, and rollin on through on the lean.

Those racers...looks to me most of em brake fairly hard just before they lean in...on a Ninja(14)...there goes yer center tread.

Kinda interesting. I've found thst i tend to wear out the front a little faster than the rear..especially when i do more twisty stuff. Lot of late braking going into corners..being lowered and stretched my have somthing to do with that as more weight is placed on the front tire IDK

A 55 will square off more in the center tha a 50 series if your doing more strait line riding..Has a sharper pointer profile

As far as your speedo changing with tire height, and/or a gear change, the answer is no because the 14R gets its speedo reading off the tone wheel. Its still off from the factory though which is kind of annoying. Why any bike manufacturer cant make a correct reading speedo is beyond me.

I'm running a 55 in the rear. Got about 2k miles and little to none squaring, but only see about 1k and the center will hit the wear bars. True fully I don't notice much of a difference from the 50 to the 55.

mrwoo, what tire are you running ? because I went to a 55 profile PR4, and noticed a big difference
from the stock 50 profile Metzler ....

It turns in a lot quicker ....

I'm using stock battleax s20. Could be my suspension issue preventing me from feeling much of a difference.
