battle to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. getting stuck
01/20/14 2:36 AM

ZX 14 2008 (CAL model) with PC V, 12500 kms, Akropovic 4-1, flies out, pair system out, Castrol power 1 synthetic oil.

Here's my symptoms

- Bike gets stuck in 2nd and 3rd gear. (intermittently)In other words its not happening all the time. It started on Sunday morning. Happened three times on the open road - only from a standing pull off, not when I slowed down and then sped up again. In normal traffic it was fine. Not wanting to damage it any further - Haven't ridden it since.
- It feels as if it something is blocking it from shifting then after a few tries (pumping clutch and pushing gear lever)it shifts into 3rd gear. (Happened once from 3rd to 4th).
- Gear indicator goes blank until it shifts into next gear.

Changed the small pipe on the clutch reservoir two weeks ago, clutch lever feels fine. - Question could air in the clutch pipe cause this? (Changed gears many a time without clutch on my Hayabusa without any hassles - so cant see that this would affect it)

Can the PC V affect gear changing in any way?
Anyone had anything similar or knows if/what the problem might be. or where to look?

Thanks

Intermittenly seems to act like sticking clutch plates or bent shift fork, does it slip out of gear at all? I would rebleed the system from the bottom up including the master cylinder.

Check to make sure your shift lever isn't coming loose from the shift shaft. And see if you can make an adjustment that will allow you better leverage on the shift pedal. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a big difference.

I don't think it's a clutch issue, I think Mad is on the right track. The shift mechanism is a ratchet on the outer part, and when a shift is made, the ratchet has to return completely to be able to select the next gear. Possibly your foot is impeding the return or maybe the return spring itself has become weak and unable to make the lever return all the way.

Good question. I don't think it should unless it is so magnetized, but then again, oil?

I have both the 14 and an ape. I start out in 1st gear [no clunks], I cannot pull up to N or 2nd with either bike. It's the initial warmup. Once I stop at the first stop sign, I grab either gear as if normal. No other time but when cold does it not shift like normal. Other than that, both have misshifts and both still shift like butter... Sans the cold start.

thanks to all.

Will bleed the clutch again.
Will check the shift lever. Danno - will check the foot issue, rode with new boots and stiff as hell so it could be them in the way. (will check that first before the lever.)

As for the clunk - its always been there going into first. Funny enough if i excilerate fast then the gear change is smoother than when riding slower. (unfortunately I cant ride her fast all the time, the roads tend to come to an end too quickly)
Oil was changed 2500 km back , its still looks clear and not contaminated. Unless its the synthetic that is now making the plates stick.

Will check it out on the week rnd and give feedback.

The reason I don't think it's a clutch issue is, you can shift up (and even down, if you're brave) with no clutch, shifting up is easy, just let off the throttle a bit. Downshifting is trickier because you have to match revs by blipping the throttle in s VERY timely manner. And riskier because you can damage gears and other transmission parts if you don't do it correctly.

Just some feedback.

Problem gone. I can only think as Danno and Mad suggested, my foot was stopping the lever from returning it all the way back. I changed boots/shoes, so that could have been an issue. Will make small adjustments on lever to accomodate new boots.
Never in 25yrs of biking had this issue.
The other thing could be that what ever got in the way is now ridden out
