M4 Retro drag slip on??
07/22/16 7:32 AM

Does anybody here have any experience with these? I was wondering how they compare loudness wise to some of the other slip ons. I currently have the Coffman shorties and I love the way they look and sound but they are too loud. After riding for more than 30 minutes my ears are ringing once I take my helmet off. My buddy has the Yoshimura r77's and I like them ok but I wish they were a bit louder. I had the m4's on my 2015 ninja 1000 abs and loved them. thanks in advance!

Hey Palmer, I have these on my 14. They are loud exhaust pipes. I wear ear plugs any way, I rode without ear pro once and it was very loud. If I could do it over I would probably buy yoshimura. Hope this helps.

I am wondering how much louder they are than the Coffman shorties. I want something in between those and the Yoshi. I doubt the m4's are louder than the Coffman's because they are at least twice as long. I have a good idea for a new thread if we could get a lot of people to participate. There are several free apps that have decibel meters. We could choose a particular app to download then set the phone on the seat and measure spl. We could do idle and maybe a couple of different rpm's. It would probably vary from iphone to android so we might want to stick to iphone since android phones have many manufacturers. It might not be 100% accurate but it would give us an idea of how much louder one exhaust is than another. I have access to the Coffman's on my bike and my buddies with the r77's. What do you think?

I downloaded a free app called decibel 10th. It has a DB meter that has peak and hold settings. With my iphone 5 sitting on the seat with the top of the phone facing the front and bottom of the phone facing the rear the Yoshimura R77's were 86db at idle 1100 rpm and 91bd at 2000 rpm and 93db at 3000 rpm. The Coffman shorties were 92db at idle 96db at 2000 and 98db at 3000rpm. I didn't go any higher because I don't like revving an engine that isn't under a load. If we can get a lot of people to do this we can create a sticky and be able to compare a bunch of different exhaust. At least we wil know how loud they are compared to each other.

Fiction14 if you could do this with your m4's it would be much appreciated if you don't mind. THanks!

So I was looking at the Coffman exhaust for my bike, but I'm concerned with the noise level. I want something loud, but not deafening. Was the noise super loud even with the suppressor in? I've listened to videos, but you obviously can't tell much with a recorded sound. I really like the look of the very short Coffmans, but I also don't want an exhaust that's going to draw the attention of the police when I'm just driving down the road (I live in San Diego and they apparently have it in for loud bikes). I want something just loud enough to be heard by other cars, especially on the freeway.

My exhaust is very loud but I can tell there were a few times when a driver did not know I was there.

Yeah, I should just go with my gut and do the Coffmans. I like that they're short and I think they look awesome on the bike. And with the suppressor in they're supposed to be pretty docile at low RPM. Thanks for the perspective!

While riding with the Coffmans it sounds like you are waking the dead. I thought it was so loud that cops would be able to hear me a mile away. Turns out they are only that way to your ears. When you are off of the bike or riding with somebody else that has them they sound normal. They sound awesome and look great on the bike. There were 2 things I didn't like which you should know. The first you will read about if you research. You have to put washers behind the kick stand to space it out or it will hit the exhaust. With it spaced out my foot would hit the kickstand while changing gears. I do wear size 13 though. The second thing nobody online has mentioned and I can't believe it. They aren't symmetrical on both sides. The right side lines up perfectly with the belly pan but the left side was about 5/8" further back. Also the right side is about 1/2" tucked in closer to the frame. The belly pan really shows this flaw because the right side lines up perfectly with it. I traded mine for the Yoshimuras to a friend and they aren't loud enough for me so I am looking at the m4's.

I think I recall there being something asymetrical about the stock pipes too. One side has that dent in it...one is back a bit farther...no issues with the belly pan though. I think you will get rid of that belly pan in time...just get a used set of Coffmans or the M4 retro drags. What you really want is a loud full system...

Yeah, the cops probably do hear you coming. Knowing that keeps you on your toes for speed traps. Laser doesn't care if you're quiet.

Has anyone not running a turbo or riding a hurly, ever simply tried removing the cans altogether and running straight pipes? I have contemplated doing this every time I see another stupid loud cruise roll by to see JUST how loud our bikes could be.

You could also check to see if the Yosh's have a "noise plug" that can be removed. I know my Akro's have them.

I knew a guy who had car exhuast tips welded onto the stock pipes. Looked very much like coffmans and costed about $60. Sounded good, ran good. Loud. Stock header was never going to be useable with stock mufflers again but the next step is full exhaust anyway.

You better believe I fired it up with no cans at all when I was installing the Coffmans. My curiosity got the best of me. It sounded good too but very loud.

I know this is an old post...but just to let anyone considering M4 retro drags, they offer a quiet baffle that locks in with a big snap ring. I think they sound better open though. The baffle definitely tames them.

I ended up getting the M4's. I've had them on a few weeks now and love them! They sound deeper than the Coffman's but not quite as loud. They are still alot louder than the Yoshi's. I need to meter them to see how they compare.
