Zx14r 2013 tire selection for track day.
02/15/17 9:36 PM

Hi all,
I would be goin to my first track day on march the next month.
I have the stock tires bridgestone battlax 120/70 58w 17
190/50 73w 17
.i am wanting to upgrade my tires to the pirelli sc2 for both front and rear.
And am looking to upgrade my rear to 200/55 instead of 190/50.
Would there be any change in bikes geometry or riding , because of the difference in height of tires ?

Yeah, it will turn in a lot easier. Might take a few days to get used to it. I find it much preferable to stock. Replacement tire is a 190/55 (think that was it but I know it was taller than 190/50) so what they give you stock is not really what the bike was made for. No problem at high speed with a 200/55.

Make sure that 200/55 will fit your swing arm. I have maybe an extra 1/4" wheel base because I have an extra link in my chain. Pirelli 200/55 was very close for me.

You will find it more of a challenge to clean the chicken strips off of a taller rear tire if that's any concern.

Same rims are fine. Riding off the edge is the problem no matter the wm/diameter/etc.

Your proposed tire sizes are valid. 200/55 will give you more agility by changing your geometry a bit. The wheels will handle those sizes as well.

More concerning is your actual tire choice. Which tire are you using? SC2 is a compound used for the Superbike Slicks and the Supercorsa SC series DOT race tires. Both of these are racing tires, designed to be used with warmers. If this is your first track day, I sincerely doubt you'll be working the tires hard enough to keep them at operating temperature, which will likely result in them performing worse than street tires.

A far better Pirelli for your application will be the Supercorsa SP. This is their highest performing street/track tire, and offers significant levels of grip and stability without the need for warmers or expert pace. Same sizes to meet your needs as well.

pretty sure the first number is the width of the rim from bead surface to bead surface. 190~200 is just 5mm/side. Makes no dif in how well the tire seals. A 190 wide rim will squeeze a 200 tire a little taller in addition to the approximate 10mm larger diameter from going from 50 to 55. it probably raises the rear about 8~10mm overall. Makes a real difference in how the bike handles.

I have been running Q3s at the track too, but you cant get a 200/55. Comes in 200/50 which doesn't get you really any difference from the 190/55.

I am also looking to go to the 200/55 so will probably be getting the Supercorsa SP to try out this year. More expensive and I here it wears faster but also a better tire.

If you want max grip out of a street tire and don't mind the cost of replacing often, the Supercorsa SP is the best tire you can buy for the 14R. The softer carcass, huge contact patch at lean, and sticky compound all work together to add planted confidence and big grip on drives.

The Q3 is a great street tire for the 14R, but I found it to be lacking at the track when I really started pouring the throttle to it. Big unpredictable slides on the drives. Lots of feedback otherwise due to the stiff carcass, just not where it mattered to me.

Just keep the traction control on, or a spare set of plastics for the impending highside!

Agreed. There's a perceptible difference in handling and traction on drives wth the larger rear. On street rides it's mostly for an extra margin of error, but on the track you'll use that agility and traction.

Simple question, yes or no answere please.

Will the Pirelli Supercorsa SP 200/55 clear the swingarm on my stock '14 14R without a smaller sprocket or longer chain?

Thanks!
