Canyons Bite
03/17/15 8:26 PM

This weekend a fellow biker almost lost his life on wws rd. A group of us were playing in the twisties when we came across a group of bikes on the side of the road. As I slowed I realized I recognized 2 of the bikes.
Guess they came up to a sweeping right hand turn. Bike 1st came up to the turn too hot and missed the turn completely. Flew off the side of the mountain at 60 mph. Good 15 ft drop. Bike hits a tree and go to pieces. Almost takes out another rider going the other way. 2nd bike following to close was able to scrub some speed but ended up falling over the edge.
Bike 1 was life flighted out. He was complaining of back pain and couldn't walk. Bike 2 was able to ride away untouched. Bike not so much.
Its that time of year around here. Spring hits and all the rookies start to crash.
Speedy recovery to the injured rider.

Yes, this is th etime to be careful. My feeling is that early Spring and late Fall/early winter are for normal street riding. It may be a good time to get some high speed runs in on a straight road but save the hard cornering for hot weather and clean roads. Unfortunately hot weather is when you will almost definitely see more police.

Ride your own ride. It's easy to get suckered into a big mistake by trying to ride at someone elses pace. Keep your eyes focused ahead of the bike in front of you. Be careful out there guys.

A couple times I found it was even easier to get suckered into a big mistake by making sure I outrode the guys behind me! LOL If you set the pace, don't worry about competition. ...not on the street. It's hard to leave your ego at home but in that situation, it's really a lot smarter.

I learned many years ago not to try to keep up or lead a fast pace. Now I usually ride in the back of the group or if Im up front and a rider wants to go faster than me I just wave them by. I know they will wait at the next intersection for me.
You get no trophies on the street.

Like my momma always said," Riding fast on the track is a test of your skill. Riding fast on the street is a test of your nerve."

This is why if I ride in a pack I am happy to take the tail. I keep plenty of room between myself and the other riders.

My co-pilot and I went on a beautiful springtime ride out here through the wineries up to Lake Berryessa. Hwy 121 is nonstop back and forth twisties with perfect new asphalt. It's nice having a partner who likes riding as much as I do, even when it's fast. She's a great pasenger.
