Recently, I removed the chain from my bike and for the first time, i got a good look at what an o-ring actually looks like. They are not nearly as thin as what I thought they were. I can see that they do wear or flatten on the surfaces that press between the insides of the plates. This seems to cause a very thin edge to squeeze away from each side of the oring. I have seen these ulta-thin black bristle looking things coming out of my chain and determined that they were broken orings. Not a problem, just a little o-ring ware. If you see a black thing that is over 1/32" thick sticking out that would be the whole o-ring busted.
Oh well. It was about time I changed that thing anyway. I can't seem wear my parts out unless i imagine they are worn out. LOL
