What's Next?
01/23/14 5:08 PM

Maybe I'm spoiled ..or jaded... but development seems to be slowing down, at least in the hyperbike, literbike and supersports categories. For the first time in a long time there's nothing I'm really lusting after, OK I am spoiled ....lol!. Oh, there are a few new releases, notably the Panigale 1199 from Ducati but it has not reached it's early promise (mostly hype) and isn't noticeably better than existing bikes in the liter category, if as good. The BMW HP4 has that active suspension control but priced beyond the reach of most mortals at close to 30 large.

The base model BMW S1000RR still seems to be top dog in the literbike class but has not changed much since released, I think BNG, Bold New Graphics are the only real change for 2014. Honda is releasing their limited edition CBR1000RR SP with Ohlins suspension bits and a few performance tweeks but that bike hasn't basically changed much since introduced in 2008... and still no traction control. Ditto for Suzuki with their GSXR1000, no TC and very little else has changed since 2009. Yamaha R1 got TC a few years ago but is still relatively overweight, underpowered and pretty close to what they released in 2009.

A lot of the Jap stuff is simply recyled with new stickers.

The new ZX-6R 636 is a nice bike and a class standout...and has TC, good job Kawasaki. The new Triumph 675R is a clean sheet redesign but the old bike was a hard act to follow and the new one is really no better...just different.

The Panigale 899 looks interesting and shows promise, hope it's better than it's big brother, this might be a bike to own, time will tell. The MV F3 800 is way cool but I think dynamically compromised like little brother, again time will tell.

The rest of the middleweights are pretty much retreads of the old designs. Japan Inc., time for a new CBR600RR, GSXR600 and Yamaha R6.

I'd have to say that Kawasaki has done a great job overall with the ZX-10R, ZX-6R 636 and the ZX-14R with advanced TC on everything and some fresh thinking.

I'm looking forward to the new Hayabusa...if it ever comes! This will most likely be a fresh design as the old platform is pretty much tapped out as far as it will go. If Suzuki does it right and can spend the bucks it would regenerate the hyperbike market which Kawasaki now owns with the 14R.

OK, so there has been some new stuff coming out, mostly Euro but for some reason I'm not feeling it...not ready to get out the checkbook and spend money. Maybe it's a personal thing or maybe my tastes have changed.

I read an article a few months ago that conjectures that the point of diminishing returns has been reached with sportbike development, in other words it takes a proportionally larger input of R and D bucks to get an ever smaller increase in performance.

From here on out, the future development may be evolutionary, not revolutionary. I think electronics are the new frontier, the liters already have too much power for most mere mortals, control is everything, witness the BMWS1000RR, it's got huge power but is almost never the fastest around a track in the magazine tests.

OK, flame suit on...lol!

Didn't you know this is a hyperbike forum?

I'm looking forward to the new Hayabusa...if it ever comes!

Oh it's coming brutha. it IS coming.

This will most likely be a fresh design as the old platform is pretty much tapped out as far as it will go.

Not so, mon frere. The Gen 2 busa that came out to meet the threat of the ZX-14 has the same engine as the Gen 1 with a slightly larger bore and a longer stroke. I believe they still have block to play with in the war of the displacements plus the cooling system of the busa can handle more heat than the bike currently makes.

If Suzuki does it right and can spend the bucks it would regenerate the hyperbike market which Kawasaki now owns with the 14R.
They will. I'm sure Suzuki is taking notes on the new 14r and they already have it planned out. Enjoy your moment in the sun while it lasts.

Although I know the 14R is better than what I have, I have no desire to run out and trade and go into debt for the TC. slipper clutch and bigger motor.
Always having to have the latest, greatest, fastest is an American thing. for some reason, the eurpoeans are just as much into maintaining and fixing up older bikes as they are new ones.
The Japanese used to change a model every two years, now it's at least 4. That's pretty much standard throughout the industry now, so the only thing that fills in between the years is if the new models are out of synch with when they came out in the first place, or a machine is so good and trend-setting that it sells well for more than 4 years.
And the other thing to consider is how much gummit attention performance attracts. I mean, how fast is fast enough on public roads? The new electronic aids exist because power alone is becoming unmanageable and unusable.
Myself, I would like to see more emphasis on weight reduction, comfort and wind protection without sacrificing any of the performance and power we've not only come to expect, but have been rather spoiled by.

Yefp Danna it they change some of those aspects the power will be put to the ground instead of pulling the weight of the motorcycle which will make it seem more powerful, hope I said that right.

I witnessed the muscle cars come and go, and I'm afraid that the performance motorcyle as we know it will soon be
regulated off the market also.

Muscle cars are like baseball and apple pie. If you do not like the culture, please move out of the country. If you are stupid and don't know you are... Still move out of the country look who you voted in the last few years. You are considered anti-more compression and should have an air valve up your wazoo, you mention banning baseball, apple pies, and fill in the blanks.

That's why I got the 14R....all the little cool add-ons they installed.I want a bike I can't outride...otherwise...what's the fun in that?;)It's very safe feeling...and screams 'let's ride'....love my 14R...there'll not be another for me.With the aftermarket installs I've added...ecu tweak...all of it....this bike is the perfect deal for me.IF they came out with a much lighter, same power...same configuration...I MIGHT consider....but I doubt it.I feel really good everytime I ride my 14R....really good.

Let's see, the Kawasaki water vehicle uses a 1400+cc motor with a supercharger and supposedly puts out around 300 hp. Hmmm, I wonder how that would go in a new ZX?

I know it's not a a hyperbike but I think the new Honda CB1100 is very sweet new item for 2014:

Honda CB1100

I'm trying to think of some good reasons not to be looking to pick one up. Indeed it's a retro-styled bike in somewhat the same way the Kawasaki ZRX1100/1200 was. In this case, however, Honda even went back to an air-cooled engine. I've not ridden one or even seen one up close but the pictures sure look nice.

I know, it's a Honda not a Kawasaki but I go both ways, when it comes to motorcycles at least...

I think dino-powered hyperbikes have peaked, and we are standing on top of that mountain with our 14s.
Next will be the rise of the all electrics, with that lack of moving parts, one of those and a HUD-enabled helmet, yeah.

Fellas, savor the mechanical perfection that we are privileged to own.

In all seriousness.

JWH, Honda did an outstanding job on that cb1100. It really does look retro. It looks just like my cb360, just a bigger version of course. I like all bikes but kawi and yamaha are my favorites. No harm in wanting something besides a kawi.

That CB1100 is way retrocool, first thing I thought when I saw it was what a great platform to build a modern cafe racer.

The 899 Panigale is high on my list, that size bike has just the right blend of power and handling for a twisty back road.

I have a friend who has an 1199 Panigale and he loves it, but other Ducati guys say it doesn't have a lot of low-end-torque compared to the older models. Guess you just have to wring it's neck to get it to go?

The future in cars, regardless of propulsion, seems to be self-driving boredom cages. Takes out all the fun as well as the danger. Hope I'm in The Home before motorcycles come to that.

The Ducati's and Aprilia's are great to look at but I couldn't live with one.

Danno, with the nanny state mentality operating in Washington, you may be right, they could legislate these bikes we have right out of existent. To be honest, given the current administration's penchant for meddling, I'm really surprised it hasn't happened already. I've said this before but it's worth repeating, I think we are living in a kind of Golden Age of motorcycling and if anything, it's only getting better. There's so much eye candy out there it's easy to become jaded. Sometimes, I find too many choices may not be such a good thing, I keep thinking that I'm missing out on something.

KAK, with my ZX14 and ZX6R as the bookends and a cruiser and a couple of literbikes in the middle for variety I think I have the bases covered but I keep looking for something new that grabs my fancy. I'm finding it's getting tougher to reach for the checkbook though, I'm approaching the mental equivalent to the point of diminishing returns.
