Drops of gas on the ground
07/11/14 5:14 PM

Since I am new to the 14R. This might be common knowledge but I never had any of my other bikes do this. I attached a pic. There are 3 black rubber line as you can see in the pic. One leaking drops of gasoline on the ground. I did put gas in the tank today and it is in the 90's not sure if that is normal. Thanks in advance!

Yes normal. There is a fuel drain hose and a breather down there. hot day, fuel expands and some may seep out of the drain hose. After the bike has a few miles, you may even get a wad of goo that drops out of there on a hot day. I bet you just filled up.

The Gen1 often makes a squealing noise from the gas cap after shutdown. If yours does this, it's just vapors escaping but maybe they addressed that on the 14r. I've heard of no concerns with the teapot squeal on the 14r. I have n't heard mine squeal since replacing the OEM fuel cap with an aftermarket.

No problems. Normal behavior. My busa does the same thing.

The bottle down there with the cap on the tip is the airbox drain hose.

Owner's manual calls for a stop at the guide ring or guide hole if I recall. If you top off the tank past the ring, the side stand is going to shift the gas over, though level, it's both kissing the top of the tank, the gas is also expanding.

1. Hose with the recovery bottle is when it rains and you are caught in it, this drains the ram chamber.
2. Hose with the seat off, you can see this is when you wash the bike or again, caught in the rain, this hose is attached to the filler cap cavity so this drains out of that area, you do not lift the gas cap up and there is the rain water in the tank.
3. Hose with the gas coming out is the expansion hose when we overfill the tank past the ring.

I was having this problem too. It seems even adhering to the guidelines about the tank fill level might be a little off at least on my bike. I think what was happening was I was filling the tank, and being full a bit of gas would get into the vent. Then at work the gas in the tank would expand and get pushed out the vent tube.

I realize how the vent tube is supposed to work, but this is my only explanation. I've never had a completely full tank at work. At least the ride home from the gas station and the ride to work, which theoretically should consume just about a half gallon of gas (~5 miles home from station, ~15 to work).

The last couple times I have left the fill level a good 1/2" below the guide ring and so far have not had this issue again.

I think mine only dripped when he the tank was filled past the splash guard. hagrid recently told me his 14r leaked a gob of goo from the overflow tube. My 08 did that. We thought it might be some kind of sealant that is put in at the factory to prevent condensation. Maybe it dissolves when it is hot and contacts gasoline.

I guess I was overfilling my tank. No more problems with the gas leaking. I just make sure not to fill tank above the ring.

It's the hot sun hitting the tank that helps it leak when it's full.
Of course black bikes are the worst.
Just stating the obvious.

WHen this happens you just want to burn off the excess drippage to keep everything clean.

The other day I had a few drops after coming out from work again. I had filled the tank to my "no-no" point the last time (1/4" from filler neck), and even though it was a couple days and even like 2/3rds tank somehow the gas drips still happened.

I can't fill mine apparently to about 1/2" below the filler neck or I seem to get the drips. Nothing I care about, just sometimes it's hard to see how full the tank is while filling.

I bet it will stop some day. Maybe there is some gas in there and it will take some time to dry out.

Haven't had a problem since that first time. I just fill it just below the bottom rim. 3000 mile and still rockin. Best bike I have ever owned.

It's nothing I'm concerned about. The only reason I really care about anything dripping on the ground is if I, or one of my fellow bikers slipped on it.

It's just personality.

ROOK

During the off season I'm going to investigate a few issues as well as the exhaust upgrade. This will be one of them, probably flush my coolant and a couple other things too, especially since I've had such a problem with the hydraulic fluids. l also have a rattle in the display area. Today I added washers to display mounting studs because as tight as the nuts were there was still couple mm of play (actual play, not just the grommets). I think this is where I'm getting that 3-4k vibration. I have yet to ride it today to find out for sure.

The gen1 had a rattly tip over sensor behind the instruments. I put a couple plastic washers in to tighten it up.

Thanks Rook. I did get rid of one rattle, but still have another rattle. It must be the tip over sensor. I noticed that sensor was quite wobbly but it was making full contact with the protective rubber grommets, although about as floppy as a pancake. I'll take your advice, it was the only other thing I could find int he area that was floppy. I figure it's either that, or maybe body work rattle given the pitch.
