bike wont start
11/02/14 9:53 PM

hi everyone, I have a 2006 zx14 with pcV with secondaries removed. well last week I rode it to work fine one day then parked it in my garage the next morning it wouldn't start. when I turn on the key all the light come on I turn on the kill switch and it just clicks and the lights flicker then all power resets.

Things that i've done cleaned all connections, replaced battery, replaced starter relay, tried to bridge from the power cable to the starter cable and the starter seems like it wont spin. Can I please get some help I'm so lost.

1. Turn key on... Toggle the dash to show Volts. What is the reading?
2. Ohm meter... Set the ohm meter to 20v and statically check the positive post of the battery and ground the black meter probe to an engine bolt, not paint. What is the reading?
3. I tried to bench start the starter at the starter post with a jumper cable, so I took the red cable and pinched the positive lead to the battery, then took the other red jumper cable and touched the starter stud that has the heavy wire on it... And no joy.

Low battery or a seized engine.

4. I am going to spin my back tire real hard and fast, then shift the gear lever up into 2nd at the same time is all about timing it.
5, I am in 6th gear and now I either have the bike on a stand and pull up on the wheel, or I walk the bike in 6th gear is to move the back wheel so the crank moves.
6. The crank moves as the bike is pushed in top gear... It is not a seized engine.
7. Back to a low or junk battery.
8. My battery is a lowampchangtown china brand... Return it.
9. My battery is a Yuasa... Who charged it before you bought it? Is this you that installed the acid?
10. My battery is from the parts manual and is the OEM brand that is matched again.
11. Are you kidding me buy a factory battery? I cheap'd out and bought whatever they matched me to and the reading says?... 12n12a or 12n14a?

Walk the drill... Do not assume.

1. I bench start the starter remote = No joy says you.
2. I walk the bike in gear and leave any doubt out of the loop, shove it in 1st gear, push with all you got and listen to the starter clutch spin = No seized crank says me.

Do the work... Even though I believe you... Where is the Answer? Chase my tail I won't... Do the work. Under a minute I could walk out to my bike spin the wheel in 6th to find out. Or pay a dealer to do a minute's work and charge you a full hour just to write you up and now get in line and wait.

Pretty funny, no?

I'd try jump starting it with a running vehicle first.

Before your criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you do criticize them, you're a mile away and have their shoes.

Just go to Walmart and get a $20 Schumacher maintainer. Let it charge a couple days. The bike's display should read 13.7 or so. My bike keeps the battery at 13.7-13.9 when bike is running. Sometimes I see 14. I would really NOT take the starter out yet. I haven't heard of a starter going on one of these yet.

Before you remove anything look behind the battery for the main fuse check that first.

Purple ZX, do the walk, check if crank is moving.
Also check the starter relay. Bbatteries are also funny things, they work and then a bit of cold and then they don't.

I had an experience similar to yours. I was doing some stuff on the bike to test fueling etc and when I came back after the bike cooled down. I had exactly the same symptoms. I also checked fuses, relays, charged battery and tried to jump start her.
I'm not saying you have the same problem, but check the left side of the motor just above the front sprocket and see a small clear bottle. Check that it's got no oil in. This was how I knew I had a problem, it was full of oil. This is where I shit in my pants and thought I had broken her.
I'm sure others can explain it in more technical detail, but in my simple understanding oil went in the wrong places and this locked the motor. Took it to Kawasaki and after taking out a spark plug it released the pressure. Drained the excess oil, Cleaned up everything including airbox, put a new air filter, and changed oil and filter. And all was good.

Put it on a stand and put it in 5th or 6th and see if you can turn the crank with the tire. If it turns then you are not hydrauically locked. It it doesnt, I'd pull the plugs and see if there is oil or fuel in the cylinders. My hunch is your battery is shot. Happens a lot when it's trying to start a big motor like ours.
