Thanks Crude.
Yeah, the 2009 onward 997.2's are the way to go.
The updated fuel injected engine resolved all IMS and RMS issues.
Plus other updates to the car included more hp and a major update to the interior / stereo / GPS.
Not to mention the amazing PDK gearbox.
But thats why you can get a 997.1 for around $50k+ NZ apposed to a 997.2 at around $85k+ NZ.
Substantial price difference between the two Gen's for peace of mind.
But you can get a Gen 1 and spend $3-$4k to get intermediate shaft bearing and rear main seal done if not already and you virtually resolve all known issues and then get 95% of what a Gen 2 offers.
Also the failure rate of the IMS bearing that will catastrophically destroy the engine is about 1 in 10.
Worth the gamble?
For some yes.
For others no.
And agree.
S version is a must with these...
Hub, not saying it's the smartest or most sensible decision I'll ever make at 57 years old, but the only thing I can say is I've always wanted a 911.
The 996's are the best value as their headlights and interiors are frowned upon with enthusiasts and the demand for them is much lower.
The 997.1's resolved those issues but are still at a reasonable price due to the ongoing IMS and RMS issue concerns.
But the performance of both cars is apparently very close.
I understand the maintenance is crazy but the 14R needs a high performance room mate and my Renault Koleos and the wife's Renault Clio are just not cutting it.
I'd keep both of them as every dayers and use the Porsche as a summer weekender.
I would probably hibernate the 911 over winter with the bike.
All this if I pull the pin and go ahead.
The car in the pic's is the actual car I'm looking at.
And Rook, with all the work you've put into your 14 to make it lighter and faster, well, seems you may just have the same issue as me appendage wise!
