Chain Lubing
03/25/15 11:50 AM

I'm planning some tours with my bike and was wondering what was the best way to get lube on the chain every 500 miles or so. Does anyone use any particular jacking device which you can carry with you to get the rear wheel off the ground?

In my case it's called a Centerstand. But there is a little folding prop that holds up one side of the swingarm. I'm sure someone with more brainpower than me will post a picture of it for you. You may be able to find it through the Search button.

Exactly, I've seen those. But the weight of the bike is a factor and I didn't want to gamble on buying the "wrong" one...I have the rear stand which works with the spools in the frame for all other times.

If I only tour on the bike once or twice a year, those times I could probably get away with just a dash of lube here and there on the chain as best I can without spinning the wheel more than walking the bike a bit here and there and stopping to lube it. Pain in the ass really.

Centerstand is the best way to go!

The Pack Jack.
The photo will change to show how it lifts in about 30 seconds.

That's how I feel. Risky. The one review i read here on the site was positive but I am sure you must use a lot of caution when using this little contraption.

I don't know how those rollers that you place under the tire work but that would seem to serve your purpose pretty nicely. I think it would take a lot of force to turn the wheel even with rollers under it.

Unless I was touring a lot, I'd just do the squirt and roll the bike 6" method. Mark where you started with a Sharpie.

Or get a Scottoiler if you're a chain maintenance maven.

Yeah...I only "tour" when I have a week long vacation and that's only once or twice a year at best.

If I take time for a multi day ride, the chain might get slightly neglected but not enough to make much of a difference because all other times I take day trips or just one overnight and get home to properly clean and lube the chain. Now, if I was retired and "lived on the bike"....that's another story!

I'll probably just hit the chain with the lube, push the bike forward a foot at a time and repeat for three or four feet and call it done. A little lube in most of the right places is better than none!!

Yeah, I've been told that todays chains last a very long time even if you never do an ounce of maintenance. For me, it's good to know the chain is free of kinks and that is the #1 reason I do chain maintenance about every 300-500 miles. When I do the 400 mile roundtrip to and from Michigan, I just hit it when I get back home...or a couple days later when I get the time.

I have that little stand with the rollers on it. It works fine, takes a bit of effort to turn the wheel while trying to spray the chain though. And it would be too bulky to take on a trip.

I have a telescoping stand thing I use for my dirtbike that packs up really small. I'm not sure I'd trust it on the 14, though.

On my street bikes, I just spray, roll, repeat. Not real elegant or convenient, but it works every time.

Apex,

Thats the lub I use, it a big standard size can 2in dia and 12 in tall. Not really what you want for a road trip.

I want something that's like 100 ml

I use Bel Ray Super Clean. They make smaller cans of it.

Just bought the snapjack yesterday. Tested it out today and it seems to work very nicely. Took a few minutes to get the hang of it but once I did no problem. Couldn't get it to fit under the seat but it looks like it may be doable with a little bit of fangdangleing .

Walmart has tiny cans of wax chain lube that are just the right size to take on a trip.

kind of like this roller stand...
more bulky than the foldable lifting fixture, but safe to use for single operator
rest the kickstand on a wooden board to adjust the height
spinning the wheel can be done easily with two hands
just watch for the wheel's sideways drift, depending on the spinning direction

Something to think about for the folding jacks, even if the bike slips off the jack, the tire is nearly only the ground so its not like the bike is going to fall over. In the link that carabuser posted, they recommend using a bungee cord to secure the side stand and something to hold down the front brake which are great ideas.

I'd just walk the bike, its a bit of a PIA, but you're only doing it every 500 miles and shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes at most.

I used a roller stand until I got my ABBA. IMO it worked really well, and was easy to use. There really is no deal about it, the little roller stand is easy and works fine. It seemed like usually the tire would drift a little but it would stabilize at some point.

It's like my ABBA, people think it looks complicated, doesn't work well, and takes 19 years to setup when it takes probably the same time as the hoops considering the entire process. Not just lifting the bike, but getting them lining them up, etc.
