Tyre pressures for pilot road 4 please
10/25/15 5:48 AM

Hi Guys, can someone please give me an idea what to pump up my tyres too?

Its summer and i check my tyres when they are cold (before i leave home).
They are Michelin road pilot 4 ,
Thats what it says on them any way, are they ok tyres to have ?

Im about 75kg and my suspension is set at its lightest.

Thank you so so so much for help, I would be lost without you guys.

Big Hugs.
Maddy xx

Same in both ?
I accept your advice and will not ever argue,
Question : aren't the front normally a bit softer than the back ?

Just going by experience the zx9r runs 34-38

Thank you lots

Maddy :-)

Tires on this bike have extremely soft compounds. Too much heat made with that too low a pressure is going to mess with the heat cycle. That's one guess. Too low a pressure, the bike wants to fall over fast. That's the profile is next. Too low a pressure and the sides wear sooner, not so much the centers.

Running the OE front lower than 42psi made the bike's sides wear right to the wear marks and boy was it sketchy turning the bike in at low speeds around a corner. Dipped so quick I had to correct quickly. Tire felt weird when taking off. Lots of wear and the feedback makes you know the tire has signed off.

Hummm... You'd think the front would be too soft at 34, the patch too close to the engine. Ballooned out, the patch is farther forward. Same goes for springs. Jack up the rear spring, the patch is closer to the engine, steers quicker. Squat the rear, the front patch is farther out like an extended fork on a chopper, it's more stable, turns slower.

So suspension wise, mess with the air it moves the patch. Mess with the spring height front or rear and the steering input is different.

I'm with Hub on this. I can only speak from my experience. I understand the basic points of adjusting tire pressure for trying to optimize performance but don't have much experience with it.

14s are big heavy bikes. Run lower tire pressures and it'll feel like you're suspension needs rebuilt. Need a lot of pressure to keep the tire from squishing flat and rolling over during lean. This particularly becomes a factor as the tire wears. I've noticed when my tires are nearing EOL I really have to keep the PSI right up there. Even a couple PSI has caused some dangerous reactions in turns like pushing wide. I do wear my tires evenly edge to edge (edge tread is worn out just as the center tread is).

I always figured the sturdiness and resilience of a tire was all in the carcass/belt system and the amount of tread left didn't really matter. As I've been through a few sets of tires and seeing how drastically different (more flimsy) they are after dismounting them I'm thinking the tread thickness is integral to load bearing as a whole.

Cool,
That explains why it was feeling funny, i was running 34 - 40 on the zx14r and the front turned in early at low speed and felt all weird and yuk.

Thanks lots guys, will do as instructed.

Maddy :-)

Need a lot of pressure to keep the tire from squishing flat and rolling over during lean.

I will concur with that. I've run lower tire pressures on the street and some of those do not help the bike turn predictably. The tire suddenly flexes as you lean in and it feels pretty squirrely. I think some tires are better at low pressure. I have used 35 front and rear on my Pirelli Super Corsas and it feels just as stable as the recommended 42 psi. Oddly enough, the Pirelli seems to break loose easier with the lower tire pressure. I think you have to get on a track to heat the tires up enough to improve grip by lowering tire pressure.

I had Micheline Power Ones at a track day and they were sliding all over braking into corners--even downshifting hard. Lowering the pressure to 28 front and rear made a very big difference in cornering traction. I seem to recall that they had the too soft, squishy, squirrelly feel at first but after a lap they were sticking better than I could ride them. I will bet you anything that 28 psi expands to 35-40psi when the tire gets hot. I can't ride fast enough and long enough to heat my tires up that much on the street. Every tire I've ever used for the 14 has 42psi molded in the sidewall info and I think that is what works best on the street. Try a little lower if you want. Some tires might have stiffer sidewalls and respond to low pressure better than others.

...also brings to mind the story of getting a flat in the middle of the night. I rode that flat home and the low pressure kept the tire very hot. I stopped to air up a 2-3 times and it would watch the tire go flat while I put the money in the machine. The heat is what kept the tire inflated the last 50 miles. Not inflated much but enough to ride carefully. I got off the bike at home and it flattened right down in less than a minute. Not recommended, I just brought it up as an example.
