Chain behavior
11/25/14 11:24 AM

I went for a nice fun ride Sunday...temps were 38 degrees...engine never went above 145 degrees except at stoplights.I pulled off in a rest stop probably 100 miles into my ride. For some reason I 'checked' my chain. It was well past the slack adjustment specs in the manual.Loose...but not dangerously. At that point...the engine temp was 145.All settings were unchanged...anyone have an experience like this?I thought perhaps the links were somehow failing...but inspection showed no damage.

Riding previously since installing the chain..temps were in the upper 50's and 60's.Chain slack was fine...as per the book.I felt the chain...it was cold.

I just now went out to the garage..it's 40 in there...checked the slack...still as it was on the ride.

Any thoughts on this?

Aw...probably just chain stretch...been a while since I adjusted it after installing.

So the new chain stayed at the proper tension for a few weeks.
Then you noticed it was loose when hot... and it still is loose after cooling down so the looseness was not caused by heat expeansion. So basically you have a chain that needs to be adjusted now.

If you did not install both new sprockets along with the chain, I'm not surprised. I had the same thing after installing a brand new rear sprocket with my old chain and countershaft sprocket. I was adjusting every 400 miles or perhaps even less. Then it seemed to go away (I think---have not ridden the bike enough last season to confirm that).

Just be sure and adjust it at it's tightest spot in the run. Too loose is better than too tight.

Thanks all...yeah...I'll give it a good cleaning and lube for winter..and adjust....It seemed I already was adjusting...and had the stretch worked out from riding previously...guess it still had some to go.Thanks again.

On a big chain like the 530 it takes quite a few miles to get the initial stretch out, sounds like you are on top of it though. Nothing to worry about.
